In response to diplomatic difficulties, a Canadian Minister postpones a commercial visit to India

In light of difficult diplomatic relations, Canadian commercial Minister Mary Ng postpones a commercial mission to India. At the G20 summit, PM Modi ignored PM Trudeau of Canada. Trade negotiations between India and Canada have been suspended.
An official announced on Friday that Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng has postponed a trade mission to India scheduled for October, reflecting the deteriorating diplomatic ties between the two countries. Days earlier, at the G20 conference in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reprimanded his Canadian counterpart.

According to a Reuters story, the minister’s spokesperson, Shanti Cosentino, said, “At this time, we are postponing the upcoming trade mission to India.”

Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, was ignored by PM Modi, who attended official bilateral talks with many other foreign leaders during the G20 conference, and only allowed a quick, informal meeting on the sidelines five days ago.

The country has been the scene of numerous rallies that have displeased India. Canada has the greatest number of Sikhs outside of their own state of Punjab in India.

The Indian government declared following the leaders’ meeting that “they are promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises and threatening the Indian community in Canada and their places of worship.”

India announced on Friday that it has postponed trade negotiations with Canada. Earlier this month, Canada announced a similar delay, citing the need to “take stock,” according to Reuters.

The two countries just stated their intention to sign an initial trade agreement this year roughly four months ago.

The free trade agreement (FTA) talks between India and Canada, which were restarted after a decade, have meantime ceased because of political concerns.

The official stated that talks will restart after the “political issues” have been settled without specifically mentioning the Khalistan issue, which caused friction between the two nations.

India voiced its disapproval of a number of Canadian political moves. We have temporarily suspended negotiations till these political difficulties are resolved because India has expressed its displeasure with some recent political developments in Canada, the official added.

The countries have already had more than six rounds of negotiations on the trade agreement. The Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) negotiations between the two nations were restarted in March 2022.
