The nonstop route between Rio de Janeiro and Rome was started by ITA Airways. Arriving at Rio de Janeiro-Galeão airport at 3:45 p.m., the company’s Airbus A330neo—a milestone in terms of technology, digitization, innovation, efficiency, design, and the ultimate manifestation of Made in Italy—operated the maiden flight, AZ 673, which connected the two cities.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Rio de Janeiro departure gate to commemorate the opening of the new intercontinental route between Brazil and Italy. Emiliana Limosani, Chief Commercial Officer of ITA Airways and CEO of Volare, Pierfrancesco Carino, Vice President International Sales of ITA Airways, Massimo Allegri, Regional Manager Americas ITA Airways, Andrea Taddei, Country Manager Brazil ITA Airways, Alexandre Monteiro, Chief Executive Officer Rio de Janeiro-Galeão Airport, Alessandro Cortese, Italian Ambassador to Brazil, and Massimiliano Iacchini, Consul General of Italy in Rio de Janeiro joined the festivities.
One of the primary tenets of ITA Airways’ strategy is its long-haul expansion, which not only boosts profitability but also adds more short-haul connections, increasing the intercontinental network’s capacity.

After the inauguration of Washington and San Francisco in the summer, 2023 will see the introduction of ITA Airways’ third long-haul destination. This will be the airline’s largest growth in the intercontinental market, according to Emiliana Limosani, Chief Commercial Officer of ITA Airways and CEO of Volare. – Our objective is to establish ourselves as the Italians’ go-to carrier for mobility. The growth of our network is heavily focused on markets with higher customer demand and a significant Italian community presence. Today’s opening of the Rio de Janeiro–Rome route represents a step toward achieving this objective. inserted the CCO. “The Rio de Janeiro location is not only strategically important for business and cargo traffic, but it is also bolstering our growth in South America, which is home to millions of Italian-Americans and a popular vacation spot for Italians. Connections are assured for anyone intending to travel between Brazil and Italy, where there are an average of 21 weekly round-trip flights.
Along with the 28 weekly flights that now connect São Paulo, the most populated city in Brazil, to the Italian capital, ITA Airways will now operate 14 weekly flights between Rio de Janeiro and Rome with the inauguration of the new nonstop trip. As a result, there will be 42 weekly flights overall between Brazil and Italy, and 56 weekly flights (including 14 from Buenos Aires) will be operated by ITA Airways between South America and Italy.
