Over the next ten years, travel and tourism in Africa could increase the continent's GDP by US$168BN.

Over the next ten years, travel and tourism in Africa could increase the continent’s GDP by US$168BN.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), working with VFS Global, announced at its Global Summit in Kigali that the travel and tourism industry in Africa has the potential to boost the continent’s GDP by US$168BN and generate over 18 million new jobs. The study “Unlocking Opportunities for Travel & Tourism Growth in Africa” claims that in order to realize this potential growth, three crucial policies must be implemented in order to achieve an annualized growth rate of 6.5% and a contribution of more than US$ 350 billion. The paper provides a set of policies aimed at boosting tourism, facilitating visas, and enhancing air infrastructure in order to improve Africa’s growth. Travel and tourism is a major industry in Africa, bringing in about US$ 186BN to the continent’s GDP in 2019 and accommodating 84 million foreign visitors. Additionally, the industry is vital to employment, supporting 25 million people, or 5.6% of all occupations in the region, with their means of subsistence. “Africa’s travel & tourism sector has witnessed an extraordinary transformation,” stated Julia Simpson, President & CEO of WTTC, during her speech at the organization’s Global Summit in Kigali today. Its worth has more than doubled in just 20 years, greatly boosting the continent’s economy. Africa has enormous growth potential for travel and tourism. It has already more than doubled since 2000, and in the ensuing ten years, with the correct policies, it might unlock an extra US$168 billion. “Africa needs marketing campaigns to highlight the wealth of destinations in this breathtaking continent, as well as simpler visa processes and improved air connectivity within the continent.” “We are excited to partner with WTTC to uncover the extensive opportunities that Travel & Tourism offers in Africa,” says Zubin Karkaria, Founder & CEO of VFS Global. “Having developed our footprint in Africa since 2005, we are now 38 governments’ trusted partner, providing our services to them in 55 cities throughout 35 African countries.  Africa has enormous potential, and VFS Global is steadfastly committed to fostering the growth of travel and tourism to and from the continent. “In addition to highlighting the various opportunities for cross-cultural cooperation, sustainable tourism, and economic growth, this report offers governments insightful information for policy formulation and gives businesses a clear path for growth in this booming market.” This paper explores the historical development of the travel and tourism industry in Africa. It’s a tale about overcoming obstacles head-on, from the 2008 Global Financial Crisis to the setbacks brought on by disease outbreaks and unstable political environments. In spite of all these obstacles, the travel and tourism industry is headed toward recovery. The worldwide body projects that 2023 will see the creation of around 1.8 million new employment and a near-full recovery, falling just 1.9% short of 2019 levels. Prospects for Africa The potential for the industry are highlighted in the research, and these include smart investments in better connectivity, expedited immigration procedures, lowering carbon footprints through the adoption of low-carbon energy sources, and increasing water efficiency. These could open up the African travel and tourism industry’s potential for long-term expansion, job generation, and economic development. Philippines and Japan sign agreement to collaborate on tourism

A historic agreement between the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLITT) of the Japanese government is expected to increase prospects for the growth of tourism between the two nations. This occurred as the first independent cooperation agreement between the two countries, a Memorandum of Cooperation for Tourism, was signed by MLIT Minister His Excellency Tetsuo Saito and DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco. On November 3–4, during Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s first official visit to the Philippines, the contract was exchanged in front of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. In line with the terms of the cooperation agreement, both nations committed to bolstering and expanding their tourism-related ties by boosting visitor arrivals from global tourist-generating markets, enticing more travelers to visit a variety of tourist attractions, including rural areas of each other’s countries, promoting reciprocal visits and high-value traveler traffic to boost tourism consumption, and supporting the robust development of the tourism industries in both the Philippines and Japan, particularly in the areas of education, culture, gastronomy, sustainable tourism, and adventure. “The Philippines’ bilateral relations with Japan have been strengthened with the signing of this historic Memorandum of Cooperation on Tourism under the Marcos Administration. We anticipate that this will greatly expand tourism opportunities with the Japanese, who are one of our top source markets. As envisaged by our President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., this will also bring about additional tourism development in the areas of sustainability, air and sea connectivity, education, human capital development, culture, gastronomy, nature, and adventure. These developments will boost tourism earnings for our stakeholders, bring about more tourism investments, and generate employment opportunities for our fellow Filipinos, Secretary Frasco stated. As of November 2, 2023, Japan is third among the countries that send the most tourists to the Philippines, with around a quarter of a million of those arrivals coming from there. Furthermore, both nations will cooperate in the following areas: information sharing on industry-related issues; education and training; mutual traffic means through improved air and sea connectivity; cooperative marketing initiatives; and improved transportation connectivity to support traveler influx and people-to-people exchange. Additionally, Japan and the Philippines decided to work together to guarantee visitor safety when they are visiting their respective nations. Senior DOT and MLITT officials will form a joint working group to ensure that the MOC is implemented correctly. The group’s term is set for five years, with the possibility of extension. As you may remember, in July 1956, Japan and the Philippines formally established diplomatic ties. Chiang Mai InterContinental Hotel 240 keys are used to open the Mae Ping.

The much awaited InterContinental Chiang Mai opens The Mae Ping in Chiang Mai’s historic district represents the first significant achievement in a strategic cooperation between Thailand’s top integrated lifestyle real estate business, Asset World Corporation (AWC), and IHG Hotels & Resorts. In one of northern Thailand’s most alluring locations, the modern hideaway officially opens its doors. Visitors hoping to engage with the traditional cultures of the area may anticipate fulfilling stays steeped in genuine luxury and infused with a sense of discovery. Thailand’s top design company, PIA Interior, expertly combined the hotel’s illustrious past with traditional Lanna heritage when creating the conversion project from the prestigious Imperial Mae Ping Hotel. The result was a warm and inviting space that pays tribute to the cherished establishment that has welcomed many vacationers over its 30-year existence. When guests are welcomed by soothing gong chimes, they will immediately feel at home at the location. This is a heart-melting ceremony that links them to the history of the nearby Wat Chang Kong, a magnificently preserved 600-year-old stupa constructed by a local gong-making community. As part of the resort’s cultural offerings, dancing events and performances will frequently take place on the well-kept lawn in front of the temple. Encircled by the recognizable scenery of Chiang Mai and covered in lush vegetation, the InterContinental Chiang Mai For the Mae Ping, being connected to culture and environment comes first. There are 240 well appointed guestrooms and apartments with views of either the foggy Doi Suthep mountain slopes or the old town. They will discover a plethora of famous sites right outside their door, including the bustling night market, the ancient 13th-century Tha-Pae Gate, and Chiang Mai’s pedestrian streets. Lanna-inspired décor blends with soft modern minimalism inside the majestic lodgings. Luxurious handcrafted items commissioned from local artists pay homage to traditional Lanna crafts, with lacquered panels, wood-carved sculptures, and beaten metal accents among them. Spacious zen bathrooms featuring plunge bathtubs provide a tranquil area to relax. Benefits from Club InterContinental are available to guests staying in Premium Rooms and Suites, such as daily afternoon tea, evening cocktails, and a gourmet breakfast provided in a private area. The tastes of the north The hotel grows fresh produce in its own organic garden and collaborates with carefully selected local suppliers, such as cacao and bee farms, and the Royal Project foundation, a Thai non-profit established by King Bhumibol Adulyadej to enhance the lives of hill tribe members. The InterContinental Chiang Mai’s eateries and bars The Mae Ping promise to be a showcase for the flavorful cuisine of northern Thailand. The Gad Lanna, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, is akin to a traditional market and features seasonal, organic ingredients that are cooked using traditional techniques to create hearty, northern cuisine. With a view of the hotel’s main pool, Kam Lobby Lounge’s evocative décor helps to capture the essence of the Yi Peng Lantern Festival. The menu features organic Monsoon Tea produced in the mountains of Northern Thailand, light meals, coffee, and well-crafted cocktails that are served after dark to live jazz music. Hong’s Chinese Restaurant & Sky Bar, the restaurant’s flagship establishment, honors the long-standing commercial connections between Lanna and China via both its interior design and menu. Fierce Sichuan, Cantonese, and Taiwanese cuisine complement the panoramic views of Doi Suthep and the city, and the hotel’s trademark Teresa Teng tea ceremony honors the well-known Taiwanese singer who used to stay there frequently. The natural and cultural treasures of Chiang Mai In-depth exploration on the property and beyond is provided with immersive activities at InterContinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping, which are laced with subtleties from the local culture. Offerings include anything from tea-blending classes and tastings of regional chocolate to exhilarating sports like hot air balloon rides, white-water rafting, and jungle walks, followed by a Champagne lunch by the lake. The hotel’s Concierge staff, in collaboration with The Center for the Promotion of Arts and Culture of Chiang Mai University, will organize and host a series of art exhibitions and musical events on a rotating basis, which will align with the hotel’s objective of becoming the cultural center of Chiang Mai. In the interim, the company’s popular Planet Trekkers program for kids will provide crafts made from coconut shells, folding banana leaves, and marking clay figurines. With the Grand Ballroom, five smaller event rooms, and a lush central lawn situated inside the temple grounds, the hotel is debuting with a range of opulent event venues for destination weddings, social festivities, and corporate functions. Recreational amenities include a tropical tree-shaded outdoor pool and a state-of-the-art fitness center where visitors can work out while taking in Lanna folk play-inspired décor. At The li Spa, guests can indulge in luxurious spa treatments to revitalize themselves. One such treatment is the distinctive Tok Sen experience, which combines traditional northern massage techniques with a compress made of herbs to ease sore muscles. Source- Travel daily

Grand Hyatt Singapore reveals the nation’s undiscovered beauties

After the Grand Hyatt Singapore “Moments of More” contest opened on August 28, 2023, 726 foreign participants submitted imaginative accounts of their unique encounters and lesser-known Singaporean treasures. On October 31, 2023, the grand prize winner of a million World of Hyatt points was revealed, along with amazing finds made possible by participants’ cameras that would motivate fresh visitor experiences when the hotel reopens in the second half of 2024. The fruitful campaign revealed lesser-known tourist attractions, provided insights into genuine Singaporean lives, and evoked poignant recollections that enhance Singapore’s allure as a travel destination.  The entries opened up a new dimension for regionally immersive encounters through first-person storytelling, which will appeal to the travel goals of the younger generation. To encourage participants in their entries, a compelling Movie Trailer was created as a theatrical opening act for Moments of More. The movie trailer, which has had nearly 190,000 views since its release, offered advice for daring travelers on how to find unique sights as well as quaint hidden spots.  By the time the contest ended on September 29, 2023, 726 entries had been received from Singapore (54.1%), The Philippines (14.7%), Indonesia (11.8%), Australia (5.9%), Malaysia (4%), Hong Kong (3%), the United States (1.8%), and India (1%). Grand Hyatt Singapore learned startling facts about this City in Nature and practical suggestions for locally immersed experiences during the selecting process. 38% of entries discussed ways to recharge in nature as wellness proved to be a popular theme, while 4% covered the theme of sustainability. 58% of entries consisted of creative content on local recreational activities that reflected the quintessential Singaporean way of life and under-rated spots with rich historical significance. The five finalists were all selected in unison due to their distinctive viewpoints on Singapore, which showcased the city-state’s hidden treasures with amazing uniqueness and inventiveness. After two weeks of open voting beginning on October 16, 2023, 1,759 individuals cast 3,518 votes in total. The top prize winner was Mr. Joseph Tng of Singapore, who won for his exceptional display of life in a public housing estate in the country’s center that shone beyond Orchard Road’s glittering cityscape. Through Joseph’s storytelling, one can learn about rooftop picnics at Skyville in Dawson, a void deck art museum at 8 Holland Drive that showcases well-known pop artists, and genuine home dining experiences hosted by enthusiastic cooks in their housing development board (HDB) houses.  He continued by saying that the convenient public transit system on the island makes all of these experiences easily accessible. Moments of More literally unearthed more treasures than anticipated, ranging from obscure tourist destinations to long-forgotten historical anecdotes about Singapore.  Travelers visiting the Lion City from abroad and from all across the country will be astounded by a number of discoveries not found in conventional travel guides. A new history site, the historic NUS Baba House, was discovered through one of the intriguing entries. Constructed approximately in 1895, this ancestral home of a Chinese Peranakan family invites guests for a guided tour of the exquisitely renovated interiors of a true Straits Chinese home with its distinctly ornate blue façade.  Others include the 164-year-old Singapore Botanic Gardens, which is situated on the edge of Orchard Road and is the first and only tropical botanic garden listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List; hidden gems in Fort Canning, one of Singapore’s oldest parks and the home of 17 Heritage Trees that are safeguarded by National Parks; and Kampong Lorong Buangkok, the island’s last remaining “kampong” that has withstood the test of time. Entries that touched people’s emotions were given special recognition, such Sajeev Digital Photo Studio, whose walls are covered in faded portraits of migrant laborers. The diverse mosaic of hidden tales and glimpses into the lives of those who impacted contemporary Singapore was created by these portraits. “Moments of More was established to find authentic local experiences and hidden jewels outside of Singapore’s well-traveled routes. The participants’ extraordinary ingenuity and passion pleasantly surprised our team and brought to our attention some unique ideas that even Singaporeans might not be aware of. The campaign’s goal is ideally connected with their choice of storytelling techniques, which include poems, song creations, and tip-offs, according to Charis Choi, Regional Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Hyatt, Southeast Asia. We want to sincerely thank each and every voter and participant for their time and work. She continued, “The Grand Hyatt Singapore team will use Moments of More’s priceless insights to create immersive experiences that capture the spirit of Singaporean life. Grand Hyatt Singapore’s marketing campaign, Moments of More, was implemented in the run-up to its gradual reopening after a multiyear makeover. The renovated hotel, which is scheduled to reopen in Q2 2024, will have 699 rooms and suites, spectacular gourmet and lifestyle ideas, a Grand Living Room, and a Wellness Haven in the Orchard Road neighborhood, all of which will be tended to by a group of dependable associates. The uniqueness of the tale (50%), public appeal (10%), and creative and artistic qualities of the following themes—local leisure activities, ways to recharge in nature, and sustainable activities—were used as the judging criteria for the finalists. The grand prize winner of a million World of Hyatt points can anticipate enriching experiences all around the world, including opulent spa treatments and gourmet indulgences at participating locations, in addition to up to 200 nights in standard rooms at Hyatt hotels and resorts around the world, with the option to redeem suite upgrades, subject to availability. “Winning the Moments of More contest is an honor. I sincerely appreciate my family and friends’ votes and comments, which helped to make my entry better. There were a lot of beautiful entries, which made the competition fierce. I’m also impressed by how professionally some of the content was written, especially by my fellow finalists. Joseph Tng, Moments of More grand prize winner, stated, “I’m looking forward to using my one million World of Hyatt points with incredible stays at Grand Hyatt Singapore and

Abu Dhabi International Airport and Etihad Airways greet the first visitors to Terminal A.

The first commercial flight from Abu Dhabi International’s eagerly awaited new Terminal A was recently operated by Etihad Airways, the flag airline of the United Arab Emirates. Today at 14:35, Etihad aircraft EY224, which was headed from Abu Dhabi to New Delhi, departed from Terminal A. There were 359 passengers on board the airline’s Airbus A350-1000 during the flight. The visitors who created history were greeted by Etihad and Abu Dhabi International Airport and experienced a smooth first-time check-in experience at Terminal A. All travelers, including those traveling in both Economy and Business classes, were given the exceptional chance to be the first visitors to the brand-new, three-story Etihad Lounges at Terminal A in honor of the occasion. Following a tasting of a specially designed meal featuring festive fare at the Etihad Lounge, attendees proceeded to Gate C27, where celebration décor and a photo booth were ready to commemorate this momentous occasion. With a ribbon-cutting ceremony that was seen by a distinguished group of guests, including board members of Etihad and Abu Dhabi Airport and aviation leaders, the ceremonial flight was formally started. Frank McCrorie, Chief Operations Officer of Abu Dhabi Airports, Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Interim CEO, and Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad, were also in attendance. Both Frank and Antonoaldo made statements to formally greet the first customers of the airport. “This is a pivotal and exciting moment in Etihad’s history,” stated Antonoaldo Neves, the company’s chief executive officer. We are excited for the next phase of our growth in our new house as we get ready to celebrate our 20th anniversary in November. “We applaud the Abu Dhabi government’s ambition in building one of the most magnificent airports in the world. The terminal has a magnificent architectural design that enhances the travel experience for our customers and reflects the surrounding scenery. “We look forward to welcoming even more passengers as we begin our transition to our new home and as we continue to grow and expand our fleet and network.” The emirate as a whole, our partners at Etihad Airways, and Abu Dhabi International Airport are experiencing a historic moment, according to Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Interim CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports. “A significant turning point in the development of Abu Dhabi’s aviation industry is the inaugural flight out of Terminal A. In addition to offering modern amenities to travelers and airlines alike, Terminal A significantly expands capacity. “We’re excited to have more visitors throughout November as we continue to expand the number of flights that arrive and depart from Terminal A.” A vital component of Etihad’s expansion plan, Terminal A can accommodate up to 45 million passengers a year and link Abu Dhabi with 117 international locations. The Terminal offers exclusive facilities for guests travelling in Business and First to enjoy a fast-tracked, premium experience, as well as specialized check-in desks for Etihad’s Economy guests. Modern biometric self-bag drop facilities are provided for any visitor who wants to benefit from a quick check-in. The First and Business class special check-in area features a kerbside drop off facility for guests flying in Etihad’s premium cabins. Porters are available to assist with bags. The roomy new airport lounges from Etihad provide a range of food and drink options, a rooftop cocktail bar, a games room, and a family room. Three planes have direct boarding access available at the Lounge for increased convenience, so many visitors will be able to catch their trip right away. Beginning on November 9, Etihad will gradually move its flight operations to Terminal A. In order to guarantee the most up-to-date information, the airline encourages all travelers to thoroughly verify their terminal information two days before to departure. Etihad will operate from Terminal A and Terminal 3 between November 9 and November 14. Starting at 11 a.m. on November 14, Etihad will operate all flights from Terminal A.
